What is MIDI?

MIDI stands for musical instrument digital interface and is a sort of language between computers, instruments, and audio equipment that enables them to communicate and sync up. It can be used in DAWs (digital audio workstations), like Soundation, for recording and sequencing music with Virtual instruments. In this context, you can think of a MIDI file as a musical performance that can be paired up with an instrument.

Import MIDI

Import MIDI files to Soundation by either right-clicking and choosing “Import MIDI file” or simply dragging and dropping them into the arrangement. You can also drag and drop pre-made MIDI loops from the Sound library or record directly into Soundation.

Virtual instruments

Choose an instrument preset in the Sound library to pair with your MIDI. You can choose from a wide variety of drum kits, synthesizers, and sampled instruments.

Note clip editor

The Note clip editor, also known as piano roll or MIDI sequencer, is where you can edit and draw in the MIDI notes.Rearrange the notes by dragging them around or by using the arrow keys. Quantize the notes to align them to the grid or to give them some swing. Copy and paste or duplicate the notes for repeating phrases.

Change the length of the notes by dragging the edges left and right. Change the velocity (loudness or strength) of the notes with the velocity tool by dragging them up and down. You can also add new notes or remove unwanted ones.

By clicking on the play button in the top-right corner, the note clip will be looped and start playing, so you can focus on that specific section.
